Most parents are interested in helping and encouraging their child to grow both emotionally, physically and mentally. To do this they buy what they consider to be educational toys for them to play with, as it is a well-known fact that children learn from playing. Educational toys such as toy blocks help to develop a child’s hand-eye coordination and increase their awareness of shapes and colours.

By playing with toy blocks, children learn what they need to do to construct buildings such as towers and they soon understand that bigger blocks on the bottom will make their tower more stable. The simple act of placing one block on another helps children to develop a steady hand and good coordination.

Playing with jigsaw puzzles helps children to develop awareness of shape and colour too, but in a different way from blocks. The shapes are usually more complex and there is design to take note of before the shape will fit properly. This is another step up in their development from what is provided by building blocks.

While educational toys are not necessarily all made from wood, it is still true to say that most wooden toys fit the educational category. Electronic toys limit the child’s emotional and imaginative development because they basically have to press a button and watch while the toy performs.

Toys that are truly educational are toys that provide limitless opportunities for the imagination to work. For instance, blocks can be used to build a tower, a yard for animal figurines to go in, an arch for cars to go under, for counting games of various kinds and many more such things. They can be stacked in a cart and pulled along or used to make a bed or seat for small dolls.

All these games require a lot of imagination and input from the child. Contrasted with electronic toys where the child simply presses a button and watches what happens they have far greater use in the child’s development.
